THEY’RE moaning about the snow up in the ski resorts in this part of the Pyrenees. It’s not that there’s too little of it. There’s too much. Too much to justify shutting up shop and sloping off.

Empty nest

THE nest is empty. Three children and one grandchild departed last weekend, heading for a cousin’s wedding in Norwich. The house feels strangely silent. And very peaceful. Washing the loads of laundry left in their wake hasn’t been a problem. Drying it all has been a nightmare. We’ve had non-stop rain for days.

FOR people in France living in more populated places than this, the local elections didn’t end until 16th March. But here, in small-town Sauveterre, with an electorate of just over 1,000, it was all over by about half-nine on the night of the 9th.

IT’S thirty-five years since my first child was a baby. Little snippets of images of his early infancy occasionally come into my mind but I’ve forgotten much of the detail.

IT’S not many who call at 6.30pm. Earlier or later is more like it. So I was surprised the other evening when my son, who is my ears for unexpected sounds because of my deafness, heard someone knocking at the front door.

IT’S election time coming up and there’s a whiff of change in the air in Sauveterre. In early March the town will go to the polls to vote for the members of its municipal council.
